Criminial 'justice' snares a family
Article Abstract:
A parent recounts the trauma of a phone call from a 16-year-old son who has been arrested and possibly brutalized by police. The contact with the criminal justice system was unpleasant in every way. Due to a bad misspelling of his name, it took some doing by the parents to find out where their son was and when he would be arraigned. The son's charges were reduced to misdemeanors and if his community service was completed to the court's satisfaction and there was no further trouble for six months, his record would be wiped clean and sealed. The son was assigned to do his community service with a convicted armed robber.

Lawyers, friends pay tribute to 'Cat' Bennett
Article Abstract:
Cathy E. Bennett, a nationally renowned jury selection and criminal defense advocacy skills consultant, has died after a five-year battle with breast cancer. She was educated as a psychologist, but while volunteering for the defense in the murder trial of Russell Means she demonstrated an uncanny ability to spot jurors who would give the defendant a fair hearing and found a calling which would occupy her for the last 19 years of her life. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Assn of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the only non-lawyer so honored to date.
