Czech privatization: a criticism of misunderstood liberalism (keynote address)
Article Abstract:
Economics professor Lubomir Mlcoch of the Charles University of Prague, Czech Republic, believes that the country is in need of a profound social, political and spiritual conversion. In discussing the specific social conditions surrounding the transformation of the Czech economy, particularly its efforts at privatization, Mlcoch claims that liberalism should always be linked with the concept of common good. Mlcoch also feels that a strong state is necessary in the promotion of private initiative and freedom and that a market economy cannot work without the support of a moral foundation.

Article Abstract:
It is always important to bear in mind that the success of a society is not merely measured in how much wealth it can produce but in how it treats the least of its members. Society should be constantly reminded that economic decisions always have moral and human consequences. Today's Americans are enjoined to constantly review their economic actions in terms of sensitivity to those in need and the enhancement of family life, friendship and community service.
