Emerging trends in managed care
Article Abstract:
The US is dependent on market forces to control health-care costs, primarily through managed care programs. Employers have gained some control over costs because of strong price competition. The possibility of strong profits in the managed care market has reduced because fewer clients remained in other health-care markets to be recruited. Therefore, medical management and cost containment, such as through reduced excess capacity in hospitals, is the future source of profits. The quality of managed-care compared to fee-for-service plans is higher and the cost is lower.

Analysis of Assn of Certified Fraud Examiners health insurance fraud survey statistics shows that health care providers are the source of the majority of frauds. A significant loss of approximately 1.2% of fraud victims' assets resulted from the reported 95 frauds which fell most heavily upon smaller companies. Statistics on schemes, perpetrators, victims, and detection were collected which are valuable for law reform efforts and industry antifraud programs.

Critical illness life insurance: innovation to address a need
Article Abstract:
Critical illness life insurance (CILI) is an innovative type of coverage for which a growing independent market exists. Increases in medical technologies and techniques have resulted in more life-saving procedures being performed. Sales of CILI policies in the UK can provide some reference for forecasts in the US. Consumers and carriers should benefit from increased availability of such coverage.
