Critical issue: the single market
Article Abstract:
Significant cross-border business activity has become established in Europe since the single market was officially launched in Jan 1993. The introduction of the single European currency at the beginning of 1999 will be an additional driving force behind cross-border competition and rationalization. However, some member states remain very slow in converting single market directives into national law. Businesses still encounter barriers to undertaking business across borders, including unusual certification, testing or approval procedures and state aids favouring competitors.

Business and the WTO
Article Abstract:
The World Trade Organisation (WTO) has often been dismissed as an obscure, complex institution, but in fact it has now become extremely important, and no business can afford to ignore it. Businesses should consider existing WTO regulations to assess whether these regulations could be used to boost their market position in a specific country or to gain access to new markets. It is also important to establish a strategy to derive advantage from the WTO regulations that will result from WTO negotiations due to take place shortly.
