Caterpillar bulldozes the United Auto Workers
Article Abstract:
The United Automobile Workers (UAW) called off their strike against the Caterpillar Corp in Dec 1995 and tactics used against UAW strikers show not only hostility to the labor movement but to the workers' basic civil rights. UAW members state that the local police, the Illinois State Police and private security conspired with Caterpillar management to try to break the strike. This campaign, they contend, violated workers' rights to privacy, freedom of assembly and association and due process. The NLRB has not acted on the many unfair labor practice charges UAW workers have filed and the UAW and AFL-CIO should take legal action on behalf of the aggrieved UAW members.

Will MOX fuel guarantee a glowing future?
Article Abstract:
Mary Olson of the Nuclear Information and Resource Service headed interest groups, in Jan 14, 1997, in objecting the Dept of Energy's (DOE) decision to produce mixed oxide fuel (MOX) from plutonium. Olson warned that the use of MOX in civilian reactors greatly increases radioactivity in nuclear wastes. Nuclear wastes can poison the environment for long periods and there is no technology currently available to neutralize them. Only the Commonwealth Edison Co stands to benefit most from MOX once the DOE approves their proposal of manufacturing and using MOX in two of its 12 nuclear plants.

There's gold in the wind
Article Abstract:
Wind is among the non-polluting, abundant and renewable sources of energy. The Northern States Power Co (NSP) has been harnessing wind power, since 1986 in southwestern Minnesota with the use of three turbines. NSP is planning to build 500 more wind turbines in the same area by the year 2000 and 143 turbines in Lake Benton, MN, with Zond Systems Inc as builder. With the growing patronization of wind as an energy source, Antarctica offers a viable site for large-scale wind energy production with its constant gale-force winds and large uninterrupted space.
