Employing ex-offenders
Article Abstract:
The UK's Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 protects ex-convicts from improper job discrimination. Generally, job applicants are not required to disclose 'spent' prior criminal convictions if rehab programs have been successfully completed. However, job applicants may not deliberately conceal criminal records information when asked about unspent convictions. Employers should check references and background information carefully and interview applicants thoroughly. An employee can be fairly dismissed for a past criminal conviction in certain specific circumstances.

Part-timers gain equal access to pension schemes
Article Abstract:
Part time employees must be allowed to participate in pension plans, according to guidance issued in light of European Court of Justice decisions. Not complying could lead to charges of sex discrimination by women, who are usually adversely affected by the lack of pension benefits for part-timers. A two-year limit on backdated claims has been established, but it may violate European Community labor law.
