Sex discrimination
Article Abstract:
It is a violation of the United Kingdom's and EC's sex discrimination laws to treat a woman unfairly because of her being pregnant or because of the likelihood of her becoming pregnant. However, the two laws vary in the approach to unfavorable treatment triggered by the consequences of pregnancy. The UK law bases its judgement on the way a man would have been treated in similar conditions and the EC law reads it directly as sexual discrimination. Direct and indirect discrimination, in the context of maternity leave, are discussed.

Sex discrimination
Article Abstract:
UK employers are not statutorily prohibited from hiring or dismissing gay employees based on their sexual orientation. However, the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 bans direct and indirect discrimination against all employees. Also, intentional harassment is a criminal offense. The Disability Discrimination Bill, when enacted, will prevent discrimination against persons with AIDS or HIV infections. European Community laws discourage harassment, but do not prohibit discrimination based on orientation.
