Ethical, legal and economic aspects of employer monitoring of employee electronic mail
Article Abstract:
Employer monitoring of employee electronic mail is evaluated on legal, ethical and economic grounds. A legal review of the practice suggests that the issue is similar to cases involving more established communications technologies such as telephone and faxes and that invoking the right to privacy is not likely to make a successful case against the practice. An economic analysis, however, provides evidence that employers should refrain from monitoring because it is uneconomical. An ethical review also suggests that the practice is unethical based on established ethical standards.
