Federal, state bills challenge same-sex marriages; bills in Congress would deny them federal recognition; state bills would ban them outright
Article Abstract:
Same-sex marriages would have important implications for several areas of the law as well as affecting the individuals concerned, but as of mid-1996 most related activity is political. Hawaii may approve same-sex marriages on the basis of state constitutional guarantees, and the US Constitution's 'Full Faith and Credit' clause would require other states and the federal government to recognize them. Other rights also argue for recognition. However, federal legislation may have a profound impact on these events.

Skadden's team pitches private stadium financing; the season of publicly financed ballparks may be ending. So lawyers are warming up alternative funding solutions
Article Abstract:
Attorneys from the Washington, DC office of New York's Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom have pioneered a way of building sports stadiums without government funds. They use tax-free bond financing, which seems particularly attractive in an era of growing public opposition to the tax breaks granted team owners by municipalities financing ballparks. The Skadden group has already funded three stadiums with private funds, two in the Washington, DC area and one in Ottawa.
