Financial issues
Article Abstract:
European economic and monetary union (EMU) was seen as a possibility in 1969 and a goal of 1980s was set by the six countries that were members of the European Union (EU) in 1970. There were unsettled economic times in the 1970s, and this meant that the project was delayed. There has been progress in the 1990s, for example, the 1992 Maastricht Treaty which set out a blueprint for achieving EMU, and the 1997 Amsterdam summit which strengthened the resolve for EMU. There have also been efforts at harmonization in the financial services industry.

Agenda 2000: a blueprint for enlargement
Article Abstract:
The European Commission's 'Agenda 2000' document covers options on the applications for European Union membership of the 10 central and east European countries. It also puts forward a draft financial framework for an enlarged European Union and calls for institutional reform to be undertaken as soon as possible. The policies presented make up a coherent strategy, and cannot be accepted or rejected individually without the strategy as a whole collapsing.
