From tech tyro to mother of invention; maternity leave launched a new livelihood for a litigator: leading Latham into a new millennium

Attorney Juli Wilson Marshall has made the development and implementation of new technology tools part of her job at Los Angeles' Latham and Watkins Chicago office. Working with 11 other attorneys, Marshall identifies ways to use technology for controlling costs and increasing productivity, and then tests selected initiatives. She helped construct the firm's intranet and create a document repository. She started experimenting with computer technology while on maternity leave in 1989.

Adam Bendell was hired at Los Angeles' Gibson Dunn & Crutcher in 1988 to work on mergers and acquisitions, but his computer experience led him to the position of being the firm's technology adviser. Bendell sees himself as aiding the firm to manage the intellectual capital of its attorneys and works to integrate new technology practices. He has helped the legal secretaries redefine their positions into that of information specialists in order to better serve attorneys and clients.
