Genetic information: consumers' right to privacy versus insurance companies' right to know a public opinion survey

Article Abstract:

Public opinion regarding access to an individual's genetic make-up for insurance underwriting purposes was analyzed. One of the vital issues concerning disclosure of genetic information is the question of who would shoulder health insurance costs for individuals diagnosed as predisposed to certain diseases. The results showed that respondents rejected the use of genetic testing for underwriting purposes, as were higher premiums and increased taxes for the coverage of suspect individuals. The role of education is emphasized to understand better the limits of genetic testing.

Privacy in the information age: stakeholders, interests and values

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to explore the interrelations of values and interests for various stakeholders concerning privacy in the information age. Several stakeholders are involved in cases wherein privacy/transparency claims are raised. Each of these stakeholders are already enmeshed, or situated, in their own interests and values. The study argues that legitimate claims of privacy/transparency may be ignored or underrepresented due to the conflicts between the interests and values of different stakeholders.
