Group term carve-outs for executives
Article Abstract:
Corporations considering 'carving out' executives from group term coverage in favor of permanent insurance should look at benefit objectives, costs of alternatives and plan design. Benefit objectives might include replacing a discriminatory plan, replacing an outdated plan or contributing to permanent insurance for a select group without additional cost. The basic alternatives are nonqualified death benefit plans, bonus plans or split dollar insurance. Classification as a modified endowment contract should be avoided.

Long-term care: an insurance industry perspective
Article Abstract:
A survey was conducted to investigate the insurance industry's involvement in providing long-term care (LTC) policies. Usable responses were received from 158 companies. The results indicated that 54% of the firms had considered offering LTC policies. The barriers to offering these policies included regulation, low profit margins and consumers' attitudes toward the high cost of benefits. Consumer education and the introduction of tax incentives could help eliminate these barriers.

New IDEAs for insuring long-term care
Article Abstract:
Long-term care (LTC) services will become increasingly important, but there is lack of public program funds. LTC policies must control costs, assure quality, have available resources and ensure equity of access. Life insurance companies can help finance long-term care by underwriting individual disability-escalating annuities policies and by spreading the risk of functional disability over people, over time and against the inversely-related risk of extended longevity.
