Helping transition: The EU police mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (EUPOL Kinshasa) in the framework of EU policies in the Great Lakes
Article Abstract:
A scholarly assessment of the European Union's Police (EUPOL) missions is presented, focusing on the operation code, 'EUPOL Kinshasa', and the specific contribution envisaged through its deployment. This is considered against the wider framework of the EU's engagement for peace and stability in the Great Lakes, with two major objectives that include consolidation of the EU's crisis-management expertise and capability, and evaluation of EU's approach to police reform for the establishment of a different social order.

The determinants of police-specific contract clauses
Article Abstract:
A study was conducted to determine which features of the bargaining environment were correlated with police-specific contract clause adoption. These clauses concern issues such as mandated equipment, residency rules and manning requirements. They are perceived as management concessions which lend employees a sense of security. The two main predictors of these clauses were the length of the bargaining relationship and a measure of crimes against persons called the fear rate of the locale.

Smoking policies at work
Article Abstract:
UK employers' smoking policies are not considered to change employees' terms and conditions of employment or to be a breach of contract. However, employers should consult with employees and unions prior to instituting smoking policies, as well as communicating and enforcing such policies so as to avoid claims of unfair dismissals for breaches. Employers may want to introduce these policies because of concerns about potential liability for health risks caused by passive smoking.
