Article Abstract:
A poll of British employers on the statutory minimum wage to be introduced in 1999 shows little strong resistance to the policy. More than 8 in 10 respondents indicated a preference for a level between 3.5 and 4 pounds per hour. Overall, survey participants expect a level of about 3.75. Respondents faced with the additional costs the policy will most commonly try to raise productivity and improve working practices. Few businesses are expected to trim employee benefits, but there is widespread concern that uprating will set a going rate for pay increases.
