New global standards may guide industry on environmental issues; European nations are leading the effort to develop the guidelines
Article Abstract:
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) is helping to develop international environmental standards to help companies systematically manage their compliance efforts. These standards will be divided into the areas of audits, management systems, life-cycle determinations of products' environmental impacts, labeling and environmental performance evaluations. Although compliance with ISO standards is voluntary, they often become mandatory through widespread use as commercial standards or are made mandatory by member countries.

ISO 14001 sets a global environmental standard; the specification could become the model for regulators and prosecutors here and abroad
Article Abstract:
Measuring a company's environmental compliance is possible by an internal compliance system to catch trouble early. Such compliance is also necessary for a company to gain certification under ISO 14001, the environmental management-system specification of the International Organization for Standardization. Internal environmental management systems should fulfil the ISO 14001 requirements while minimizing the chance of future litigation with third parties or the government. The ISO 14000 series are all international environmental standards.

Implementing an environmental management system in accordance with the ISO's draft standards is not necessarily costly and could yield benefits as well
Article Abstract:
The International Organization for Standardization has released its draft of the ISO 14000 standards for environmental management systems (EMS). Designed to cover every type and scale of business, these standards also lay the groundwork for the more ambitious ISO 14001, which describes the basic elements of an EMS. Rather than being regulatory, the standards offer a guide to appropriate tools and mechanisms for sound management of environmental requirements. Such practices are sound business despite legal concerns about documentation.
