In memoriam: Lewis F. Powell, Jr
Article Abstract:
Lewis F. Powell, Jr., who served as an associate Supreme Court justice from 1972 to 1987, received several tributes after his death in 1998. He was honored for his years of public service and for the grace and rectitude of his private life. Though aristocratic in personal background and essentially conservative in judicial philosophy, he wrote some of the Court's most socially significant decisions such as the Bakke decision on race-based admissions.
