Israeli Supreme Court begins to Americanize law; it has recently cited the U.S. high court in speech, religion, sexual discrimination cases
Article Abstract:
Rulings of the Israeli Supreme Court have during the 1990s cited substantial US authority in support of their conclusions and rulings in the area of civil rights provide examples of US law's privileged position. Mindful of the potential harm of hateful speech in the multicultural society of Arabs and Jews and of the analysis of Holocaust history linking the Final Solution with Nazi propagranda, Israeli free speech law started with less tolerance of hateful speech and its shift, under a US influence, is a triumph for individual rights coming at the expense of some communitarian values.
