It was a perilous year for many law firms
Article Abstract:
1992 saw cutbacks at many law firms, and some of them were due to fallout from the savings and loan crisis. Some firms who had represented Lincoln and other failed savings and loans, most notably New York's Kaye, Scholer, Fierman, Hays and Handler, had to pay large fines to settle claims against them. Rates for legal malpractice insurance went up during 1992 and a number of firms were found guilty of malpractice. Some firms downsized or froze salaries due to the recession. The end of the year saw signs of an upturn.

The corporate secretary has a special role as advisor to the board of directors, and should try to relieve top officers of administrative duties while maintaining organization and serving shareholder needs.
