Lawyers as peacemakers: our Navajo peers could teach us a thing or two about conflict resolution
Article Abstract:
Navajo traditions emphasize the individual's role in the community as a part of peacemaking and dispute resolution, suggesting how lawyers can do similar work in the wider community. The legal profession is a helping one as well as a technical one, in which negotiation and the creation of harmony are vital. As the next century arrives, lawyers should strive to ensure all members of society feel a part of it and have access to the legal system. The beliefs underlying the nation's shared values must be articulated.

A jury of your peers: is it in the best interests of justice to have lawyers serve on juries? Yes: it's everyone's duty - including lawyers
Article Abstract:
Lawyers should be allowed to serve as jurors for their own benefit, to improve public perceptions of the profession, and to help improve the conditions jurors face. Lawyers who have served as jurors nearly always say the experience will help them perform better in court. Exempting the profession from jury duty stirs resentment by others and is too drastic a solution to limited problems. Lawyers are not more likely to make bad jurors than are people with any other training or background.

No: the temptation to take over is too great
Article Abstract:
Most lawyers who serve on juries end up corrupting the process and endangering the rights of the parties by usurping the judge's role or introducing information that could not be revealed in the courtroom. Lay jurors tend to defer to the legal interpretations of lawyers and often give too much weight to their opinions or knowledge in other areas. Lawyers' presence in the jury corrupts the legal process and should be stopped.
