Leave Commission issues studies on FMLA
Article Abstract:
A survey of 2,254 employees conducted by the Commission on Family and Medical Leave found that only 2% to 4% have taken the leave since Jan 1994 and about 50% took less than ten days. This does not agree with small businesses' claims that the Family and Medical Leave Act would result in significant profitability and productivity reductions if expanded to cover small businesses, increasing the likelihood of expansion. A survey of 1,206 employers found that 66% had to change their policies, with the length of leave increasing by 66%, and 69% added men to their family leave policies.

Managing employee absenteeism: interplay of the ADA, FMLA, and workers' compensation
Article Abstract:
Enactment of state and federal labor laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, and workers' compensation laws have complicated the ways in which employers are required to treat worker absenteeism. The interplay of laws can affect the length of permissible leave from work and the employer's ability to obtain medical information about employee absences. Also affected by the interplay of laws are fitness for duty determinations and benefits.
