Mafia, media and myth: representations of Russian organised crime
Article Abstract:
The concept of mafia is reinforced through media representations of Russian organized crime. Events in 1950s Soviet Russia supported the interpretation of the mafia as based on conspiracy networks and ethnicity. Hollywood films of the era presented this interpretation to a widespread audience, furthering its acceptance. Although mafia does not accurately describe the type of crime occurring in post-Soviet Russia, the term has been cemented in populist perception.

Going down the glocal: the local context of organised crime
Article Abstract:
Transnational organized crime may have a closer link to local criminal activity than previously believed. While many law enforcement policies create a distinction between international and local venues, local criminal groups form complex social systems and networks which establish trading relationships between themselves. By recognizing this structure, policy makers can develop more efficient law enforcement strategies.

The terrorist finance unit and the joint action group on organised crime: new organisational models and investigative strategies to counter 'organised crime' in the UK
Article Abstract:
Law enforcement policy in the United Kingdom has become less efficient due to its restrictive strategic structure. Policies developed to fight organized crime have become the standard investigative procedure for all forms of law violations. This has resulted in inefficient crime fighting and increasing lack of accountability for interagency law enforcement initiatives.
