Mail fraud: the bottom line at the USPS
Article Abstract:
Advertisements of the US Postal Service (USPS) in the mass media giving random facts about the USPS and its operation include the assertion that the USPS supports itself and receives no taxpayer dollars. This is technically true but very misleading because the USPS receives many privileges and exemptions which the private sector does not. These include a guaranteed monopoly on the delivery of first-class mail and not owing corporate taxes or having to issue dividends when it turns a profit. The technological innovations such as e-mail and fax may change the USPS's special treatment.

Post Office's special delivery of private data
Article Abstract:
New Postal Service practices are jeopardizing consumers' right to privacy. Approximately 20 private companies are employed by the Postal Service to process entries in the National Change of Address system. Most of the licensees belong to the direct-mail business, making people who change their addresses prime targets for additional junk mail. The post office is also breaching government-private industry boundaries in its joint venture with AT & T, Moving Solutions.

Medical database spotlights tech privacy issues; new lawsuits and a plan for centralized health care data inspire calls for protection
Article Abstract:
Public protests about proposed health care identification numbers and storing of medical records in a central electronic database highlight the scant level of US privacy protection. The ease of gathering information online and the growing amount available there questions old assumptions about letting private companies gather and pool information. Congress is considering many privacy-related bills.
