Beyond the bottom line; to regain the public's trust, lawyers need to work for the common good
Article Abstract:
The legal profession can regain public trust by various kinds of volunteer work such as teaching peer mediation as well as other kinds of community education. Teaching our youth mediation and conflict resolution skills shows them that self-control is to be valued more than self-indulgence in our society. Lawyers must foster the sense that along with Americans' many rights goes an assumption of responsibility. The legal profession must concentrate on the larger public good rather than on the bottom line.

Looking for lift; journalists, politicians join lawyers in search for ways to boost public images
Article Abstract:
Journalists and attorneys joined in a Jan 1997 forum in New York City sponsored by the ABA Section of Litigation and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Both agreed that they are victims of public disdain and seemed to feel that excesses by individual members of their professions were to blame. Increasing economic pressures compound the problems.
