New laws for young workers
Article Abstract:
The UK's 1997 Health and Safety (Young Persons) Regulations implement the EC Directive protecting young workers. The regulations eliminate some outdated special protections, specify existing employer compliance duties, and institute safety protections for young employees including required risk assessments. A separate document proposes Dept of Trade and Industry (DTI) regulations on rest periods, night shifts, and employee breaks. While the DTI wants to curb the negative impact of implementing these regulations, it also plans to create a dual enforcement system to protect adolescent employees.

Revised first-aid ACoP and guidance move from prescription to risk-based advice
Article Abstract:
The UK Health and Safety Commission's 1997 revisions to the Approved Code of Practice will allow workplace first aid requirements to be based on actual risk. The guidance is designed to provide employer flexibility lacking in the older version. The numbers of employees required to be trained in first aid, previously based on a ratio formula, will be based instead on risk assessment conducted by the employer.
