The private sector in perspective - 1996/97
Article Abstract:
Pay deals reached in the private sector in Great Britain have remained stable in 1996/97. Only four of the industrial groupings analyzed increased more than 3%. This statistical sameness conceals a more complex picture, with the variations there have been reflecting the mixed benefits of an economy just emerging from recession. Construction order books have increased, consumer demand for the products of the paper and printing sectors has gone up, and profitability of finance and of the chemicals sector have led to higher wage settlements in these areas.

Pay prospects for 1998 - a survey of the private sector
Article Abstract:
Data on wages in Britain suggests that private sector employers are feel wages will rise in 1998, although increases will be small. Company performance, the cost of living and a tightening of the labor market are the key influences on wage settlements. Employers fear that the tightening labor market and accelerating inflation will exert an upward pressure on wage settlements, although competitive pressures will ensure that these do not run out of control.
