No good dean goes unpunished; seven law deans were fired so far this year, despite raising funds, hiring legal stars, etc

Article Abstract:

The decade of 1986-97 has seen funds for higher education evaporate and many university presidents, as a result, decide it is more expedient to dismiss law school deans before the conflicting demands of their many constituencies push them to resign. Those deans targeted tend to be young idealists who assumed their deanships to further quality legal education, and dean at the lower-tier law schools face the greatest risk as part of the funds for their schools are being taken to fund other parts of the university.

Top Howard grads land choice jobs; rest of class scores low

Article Abstract:

The bar examination pass rate for African Americans refuses to rise above 61% and in 1998 Howard University law school dean Alice Bullock began a study of causes and solutions of this problem. A part of this study is a one-day bar prep course offered to the entire graduating class of Howard, and a five-week, 10-day course for all graduates taking the Maryland bar. The best graduates of Howard will not have trouble finding employment, and law firm partners asked define this variously as the top 5%, 10% or 20%.
