Furthern upturn in settlements
Article Abstract:
The pay database of the British Industrial Relations Service shows an increase in settlements during the latter part of 1997, hitting 3.5% in Oct and Nov after 1.5 years of stability at 3%. All indications are that settlements will remain comfortably above 3%, although it is too early to tell whether this increase will be sustained. Rising inflation has been the main cause of the upturn in settlements, and there is increasing evidence that skills shortages have not played a part

Upturn in settlements sustained
Article Abstract:
British pay awards have levelled at 3.6% during the first qtr of 1998 and after their rise in aut 1997 remained 0.6% higher than a year ago. Private sector awards vary depending on trading and labor market conditions, while government policy restrains public sector deals. Employers are likely to stay under pressure to keep awards well above the 3% level in the near term, with retail prices 0.7% higher than a year ago.
