OmniPage and OmniForm for Macs
Article Abstract:
Caere's $549 OmniPage for Macintosh 7.0 OCR application and its $149 OmniForm for Macintosh 2.0 forms generation software offer several enhancements to already excellent programs. OmniPage 7.0, for example, features additional proofreading and correction capabilities that facilitate faster processing speeds. It also includes Thumbnail Views that display small graphic document representations as they are scanned in, and a MacPaint-like eraser tool for eradicating a scanned image's unwanted noise. OmniPage 7.0 also includes many customizable features such as Smart Windows. OmniForm 2.0 has also been enhanced to assist law firms in creating original forms using standard draw and text tools. OmniForm 2.0 enables users to create forms from existing hard copy. OmniForm's recognition, however, suffers from typical imperfections that are inherent in OCR technology. Despite these imperfections, OmniForm remains a useful tool for law offices looking to automate information retrieval systems.

OmniForm 1.1 v. Formbuster 2.1
Article Abstract:
Caere's $349 OmniForm for Windows 1.1 earns a top rating, while Data Ranch's $70 Formbuster for Windows 2.1 garners praise for its ease of use and low price. Formbuster creates a document by producing a graphic of the original which is scanned, faxed or imported from a word processing program. Users add text by entering it in a dialogue box, then dragging it to the proper space on the form. Formbuster saves all entries, so users can reuse data in other fields or documents as appropriate. Formbuster's chief fault is that all documents it creates look like faxes and are frequently crooked. OmniForm creates an original form instead of a graphic, and it automatically straightens the document on the page. It scans and recreates text, then flags any potential data entry point using its Logical Form Recognition technology which allows it to distinguish data fields from other elements. Users can name the data fields, then import data to them.

ZyIndex 5.21 vx. dtSearch 4.0
Article Abstract:
A review of the ZyIndex 5.21 and dtSeach 4.0 text retrieval programs reveals that dtSearch Software's $199 dtSearch 4.0 program is the superior. ZyLab's ZyIndex 5.21 program costs $395. dtSearch enables users to perform all the functions from a single program, unlike ZyIndex; this efficiency is particularly useful for those who wish to create indexes on the fly. Another nice feature found in dtSearch is its ability to index zipped files without decompressing them. Both programs offer Boolean searching once the index is created, but dtSearch enables natural language searching as well. During a test index of a 2.5MB file, dtSearch was twice as fast as ZyIndex accomplishing the task in 58 seconds; ZyIndex took 2.5 minutes.
