Pay awards undisturbed at 3%
Article Abstract:
UK pay settlements remained at 3% in Dec 1996, the ninth straight month at that level. Inflation, unemployment, and other forces affecting wages appeared to be generally balanced. However, the biggest influence on wages may be the negotiation of long-term agreements, exemplified by the Blue Circle Cement deal. In Dec., manufacturing awards averaged 3%, while service jobs averaged 3.5%; during all of 1997, staged agreements averaged approximately 2.8% to 4% in increases.
