Pay pressures remain sedate
Article Abstract:
UK pay settlements continued to average 3% in January, 1997, indicating that declining unemployment and a robust economy are minimizing inflation pressures. This stable level of pay increases appears likely to continue in the near term, although inflation could affect pay increases later in the year. Settlements in the public sector and in the engineering, retail, wholesale, and finance industries are discussed.

Settlements holding firm at 3%
Article Abstract:
UK pay settlements continued to average 3% through June 1997, the same figure maintained since Apr 1996, but price inflation could begin to force pay raises higher. However, the traditional tie between inflation and wages appeared to be irrelevant, so the 3% was considered likely to continue. Trends appeared to be stable is somewhat downward. Specific awards and negotiations are described.
