Privacy bill targets work site monitoring
Article Abstract:
The Privacy for Consumers and Workers Act, HR 1218, would restrict much of the electronic monitoring prevalent in industry and promises to be one of the priorities of the 1993 Congress. One use of monitoring other than checking up on employee productivity has been to shield employers from liability for inaccurate information provided by employees to customers. Employees complain that monitoring leads to great stress and there has been some concern that the practice invades personal privacy. The bill would require more notice to employees about monitoring and its purpose.

Law firms, employees may clash over rights to computerized data
Article Abstract:
The issue of employees' privacy interests in some of the personal data stored on office computer systems can best be dealt with in an addendum to the personnel manual giving the firm's policy on privacy and computer security. Warning of the lack of an employee privacy interest in office computer system data should help obviate any claims of invasion of privacy while still ensuring access to the whole system in order to maintain it.
