Public discontent: the debate goes beyond tort law; it's about lawyers
Article Abstract:
The tort system in general, or at least some significant parts of it, needs reform, though many of those now proposed are unhelpful and the present impetus stems largely from a long-standing public-relations campaign. Large tort defenders want to adjust the system's rules to win more victories and minimize their payments for harm inflicted. Furthermore, increasing complexity and diversity in US society creates more conflicting rights and generates increasing frustration, now aimed at lawyers and the legal system.

Jest the facts; the real punchline is lawyers deserve some respect
Article Abstract:
Public denigration of lawyers is given a tongue-in-cheek critique. After stating that public opinion of lawyers containes some unfair stereotypes and some truth, examples are given. Examples of justified criticism include lawyers' workaholism and undue self-promotion. Examples of unfair stereotypes include greed, justified by the argument that most people are greedy. Good points include the fact that lawyers are not insurance salesmen.
