Pro bono's not enough for the job
Article Abstract:
Legal assistance to the poor should be funded by the government rather than taking place through pro bono legal services. Pressuring lawyers to perform pro bono work subverts the goals of altruism and professionalism. Access to justice will not receive the status of a right until it moves from the world of philanthropy and voluntarism to that of government funding. Lawyers knowledgeable in state and local politics could help find sources of funding.
