Review body pay awards staged again
Article Abstract:
The UK pay review bodies have recommended 1997 pay increases for public employees averaging 3.3% overall, but the government plans to stage the increases as it did in 1996. This controversial move is being made to comply with government policy tying wage increases to costs savings and reduces the overall cost to a manageable 2.4% increase. The election of a Labour Party government could lead to an even more stringent policy. The recommended increases for various groups including health care providers, nurses, dentists, teachers, senior officials, and military personnel are presented.

Article Abstract:
UK 1995 Budget measures cut taxes and reduce public expenditures in the period 1996-1999. Public sector pay increases will be closely controlled and need to be offset by other savings. Other changes include reduction of employers' rate of national insurance contributions, employee share scheme changes including tax relief for Company Share Option Plans, a company car fuel tax, and an increased pensions earnings cap. The budget forecasts 3% growth and downward inflation during 1996.
