Setting the ground rules: judge controls snacks and wisecracks, dismisses Norplant bellwether case
Article Abstract:
The Norplant bellwether case was dismissed by Texas Eastern District federal Judge Richard A. Schell in Mar 1997. Schell, who also imposed a gag order in the ongoing litigation, ruled the drug company was not required to have warned the five bellwether plaintiffs of potential problems from the use of the Norplant contraceptive implants. The Norplant litigation involves 2,633 consolidated federal suits, with many of the plaintiffs residing in Texas. Some attorneys believe Norplant cases will be more difficult to win than breast implant suits, because of the nature of the injuries involved.

Rungful suits
Article Abstract:
Ladder manufacturers are one American manufacturer who have almost lost patience with product liability suits. They have responded by sticking more warning labels on their products, with one actual ladder warning sticker reproduced in a key products liability casebook used by law school classes actually containing 30 separate warnings. These labels have apparently not reduced litigation. An Acme Ladder Co label so complete as to be somewhat humorous is reproduced.
