Skills-based pay and multiskilling: Bayer Diagnostics and Portsmouth Water
Article Abstract:
The UK's Portsmouth Water and Bayer Diagnostics companies have moved to skills-based pay structures designed to promote performance and multiskilling. The links between skills and pay were introduced as part of grading structure revisions. At Bayer's Bridgend site, the change to skills-based pay and grades led to gains in employee commitment, product quality, and job efficiency, and saved the site from possible closure. Portsmouth Water's multiskilling efforts have improved the overall employee skills among its work gangs.

Refining pay structures at Tate and Lyle Sugars
Article Abstract:
UK sugar refiners Tate and Lyle Sugars have implemented a plan in which employees received profit-related pay and shift allowance increases in exchange for cutting overtime pay and leave. The move was in response to cost pressures and a need for harmonized employee groups. The union membership initially rejected the package, but then accepted it when the company threatened to dismiss the employees. The company's revised bonus plan is also discussed.

Senior Civil Service - the new pay system
Article Abstract:
The UK Senior Civil Service was reorganized in 1996, with the grade and pay hierarchies replaced a system of pay bands overseen by a review body. The goal of this revamping was to create a flexible and consistent system that rewarded senior employees most involved in forming policy. This system will take several years to become clearly established, and has already been hampered by problems in areas such as merit pay and data monitoring.
