Social issues
Article Abstract:
European social policy is a contentious issue and there are differences in the approaches of mainland Europe and the Anglo Saxon world. Britain has been criticized for social dumping, and has in turn argued that mainland European policies tend to foster high unemployment. This difference between Britain and other European Union (EU) members is still apparent, despite the election of a new British government formed by the Labor party. Some areas, such as employment policy, are national domains, but there hs been an increase in the indirect involvement of the EU.

Social issues
Article Abstract:
The basic differences in social policy in Europe are evident in debates about jobs strategy and labour market reforms in EMU. Labour renounced the UK's opt out from the Maastricht treaty's social protocol which sets out basic principles for labour legislation, focusing on workers' rights. Adopted measures include equal pay for equal work, employers' and employees obligations with regard to health and safety and posted workers. Recent actions relate to part-time work, sex discrimination, preserving pension rights and acquired rights.

Employment and social policy
Article Abstract:
The European Commission has made many attempts since the mid-1970s to improve workers' rights, but to some extent legislative progress has been hindered by UK opposition in many areas. The UK government opted out of the EU's 1989 social charter, and has since blocked measures including proposals to regulate the obligations and rights of employees working temporarily outside their home country; and to give temporary and part-time employees the same rights as full-time workers.
