Spoils of war? A solution to the Hermitage trove debate
Article Abstract:
The fall of the Berlin wall and subsequent exhibitions by the Hermitage and Pushkin museums in Russia of artwork that had been thought lost raised complex political, social, legal and cultural conflicts between Russia and Germany, the nation of the previous owners of much of the art. Germany claimed that the art was stolen by the Red Army and belonged to Germany and its citizens. Russia claimed that the art was reparations for damage to Russia during the war. The best solution is to give Germany title to the art, but to use restoration efforts and joint exhibitions as a more gradual form of reclamation.
