Ten essential peripherals
Article Abstract:
Notebook computer users should invest in 10 essential peripherals to facilitate optimum telecommuting experiences. High-speed modems that feature convenient brackets for plugging in phone lines are an essential purchase. IBM's Modem Saver is also an excellent solution for indicating whether telephone connections are safe. TeleAdapt's TeleSpool provides a long enough cord to reach phone jacks, and portable surge protectors protect users' sizable investments from random power surges. Zip Drives allow users to load excess data that will not fit on their notebook's hard drive, and Iomega's Jaz Drive offers even more storage via removable cartridges that hold up to 1GB. Laser pointers are great tools for presentations and Parallel Technologies' Direct Parallel Cable provides high-speed data transfers. Finally, Targus's guaranteed products offer users essential carrying cases to transport all of their accessories, and a Portrait Pivot 1700 Monitor is an excellent choice for users' viewing once they return to the office.

Simple desktop faxing solution
Article Abstract:
Symantec's $99 WinFax Pro 8.0 is a much improved upgrade to Symantec's earlier fax software offerings. Symantec has eradicated the bugs that plagued earlier versions and WinFax Pro 8.0 is a stable, efficient product. WinFax Pro's core feature is its Controller, which is added to the user's Startup Folder upon WinFax Pro's installation. The Controller facilitates fax sending or document scanning for fax transmissions. WinFax's clean Send Screen is uncluttered and it features comprehensive information for users to complete fax transactions. The package also includes tools that annotate user faxes and that clean up received transmissions. WinFax Pro also schedules faxes for later transmissions. The application includes excellent networking features and while faxes can be delivered with any shared modem, multiple modems can be configured for individual users.

Hitting the pavement
Article Abstract:
New products that will be helpful to mobile workers are reaching the market. Mobile Office Vehicle's $150 AutoExec is a portable desk that is placed on the passenger seat in an automobile. The desk offers a large work surface and a second subwork surface that slides out toward the driver. A non-skid border keeps a computer from sliding off the work surface. There are compartments for storing pens, folders, planners, a cellular phone and a casefile as well as a computer. DeLorme Mapping is offering TripMate, a GPS system that combines the company's Hyperformance GPS Navigation Device and its Street Atlas USA 4.0 software. The device employs a notebook computer to navigate the route, estimate arrival times and mileage, and to display the course onscreen. TripMate is priced around $150.
