The Boston Globe Ethics Crisis: Muddied Standards, Muddled Management
Article Abstract:
Events at the Boston Globe in the late 1990s demonstrated how failing to establish consistently applied core values. Reporter Mike Barnicle became a strong representative for Boston's working class, but was accused of committing plagiarism. Similar charges were made of Patricia Smith. Smith resigned in June, 1998, admitting to fabricating material for her columns. Barnicle printed George Carlin's material without attribution and publicly resisted that charge and the resulting controversy led to Barnicle's suspension for 2 months and his eventual resignation. Unclear standards were unenforced at every possible point of decision in this incident.

Should there be national standards for employer employee relations?
Article Abstract:
National business standards would ensure corporate America will take care of its employees in a rapidly changing global economy. Government policies could promote international unionism and condition US market access on recognition of labor rights and standards. Workplace governance and equal management-employee partnerships should replace corporate paternalism. However, Goodyear and other large companies are approaching this question by emphasizing lifetime employability based on increasing education and skills as an alternative to lifetime employment and additional government bureaucracy.

Business School Ethics--An Overlooked Topic
Article Abstract:
Corporate culture needs business ethics, and business schools are the best places to teach such values. Executives have been shown to willingly practice fraud in model exercises, business school students admit to unethical conduct, and business school deans have accepted unethical behavior in hypothetical situations. Ethics training needs reform.
