The Memphis Sanitation Workers Strike of 1968
Article Abstract:
The 1968 Memphis Sanitation Workers Strike evolved into a protest by the city's blacks against the failures of the civil rights movement to secure them equal rights. Black dissatisfaction had not coalesced into a massive protest before because of the split of black loyalties between various leaders and organizations. The participation of Dr. Martin Luther King in marches associated with the strike and his subsequent assassination brought the strike and racial problems in Memphis onto the national stage, and adverse criticism nationwide prompted the city to settle the dispute.

Union leadership and the conferral of symbolic rewards: Michael Quill and the Transport Workers Union
Article Abstract:
Michael Quill's leadership of the Transport Workers Union was marked by success at symbolic identification with workers' concerns. He was very effective in using his public persona to dramatize his support for issues without necessarily effecting any tangible gain. One example was his manipulation of the media with a publicity-hungry, confrontational style. Quill's symbolic acts galvanized labor support for him and for most of his tenure at the union's helm led to smoother negotiations with New York City mayors.
