Article Abstract:
Businesses eager to use information networks for commerce and communication must carefully evaluate both general laws and those specifically relevant to them. Questions of jurisdiction, community standards, confidentiality, privacy, defamation, discrimination, and intellectual property rights are all common, and each is discussed. System operators of bulletin boards are at particular risk, though many activities subject to civil penalties are only criminal if done in pursuit of a profit.

Compliance officers: one part ombudsman, two parts watchdog
Article Abstract:
1992 saw increased interest on the part of corporations in including a compliance officer on their corporate staffs. The Organizational Sentencing Guidelines which became effective on Nov 1, 1991 were the main impetus for this trend, since these guidelines provide that evidence of a corporate enforcement program can result in a more lenient sentence for corporate misconduct. A job and authority description for the ideal compliance officer is given.
