The corporate responsibility for basic research
Article Abstract:
The rationale for federal funding of basic research used to be making the US militarily and scientifically strong so the country could win the cold war. This rationale no longer held true once the Soviet empire collapsed. Worries about budget deficits heightened government reluctance to fund basic research. Nonprofit corporations and foundations provide some funding but corporations should take up most of the slack. Businesses should help the country keep the excellent basic research institutions that will continue to give the US a scientific and technological lead in the global economy.
