In defense of Floyd: appropriately valuing companion animals in tort
Article Abstract:
Companion animals should not be valued like inanimate personal property when tortious conduct results in the death of the animal, and animal guardians should be allowed to recover damages for the loss of the animal's companionship. Some jurisdictions have dismissed infliction of emotional distress claims or have valued the animal at market value. The tort system is intended to compensate for wrongs and provide deterrence. These objectives would be carried out by recognizing and compensating for the emotional loss that can result from the death of a companion animal.

How defense contractors can survive in a peaceful world
Article Abstract:
Defense contractors have a poor record at making successful conversions to peace-time industries but the end of the Cold War will force many contractors to find new strategies for doing so. Because they did not operate in a true commercial market as contractors, many companies do not have the know-how needed to evolve and compete. Diversification is the most promising approach to conversion and through careful planning and existing business incentives it is possible to succeed. Small business contractors and successful conversions are discussed.
