The fallout continues: some lawyers in the O.J. Simpson criminal trial buck at a public branding by the California bar
Article Abstract:
The California State Bar released public reprovals of Carl Douglas and Barry Scheck, two defense attorneys in O.J. Simpson's criminal trial, and a directional letter was sent to Robert Tourtelot, Mark Fuhrman's attorney. Both Tourtelot and Scheck felt the Bar had inappropriately released the information to the press and Scheck felt the Bar was grandstanding. The Bar's chief trial counsel, Judy Johnson, believed media attention was necessary to support public confidence in the Bar's ability to discipline lawyers.

The Himmel effect: 'snitch rule' remains controversial but effective, especially in Illinois
Article Abstract:
The suspension of Illinois lawyer James Himmel in 1988 has had a lasting effect in motivating lawyers to report malpractice by their colleagues. Himmel did not report another lawyer's stealing money, and the Illinois Supreme Court disbarred him for his inaction. While the ruling is controversial, complaints by lawyers have increased in Arizona and Illinois as a result. Effects in other states may exist, but statistics are harder to find there.
