The impact of the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act of 1990 on the food industry
Article Abstract:
The 1990 Nutrition Labeling and Education Act (NLEA) requires the food industry to meet detailed ingredient disclosure rules and to regulate nutrient content and health claims, changes which should increase consumer confidence. The industry lobbied successfully for a one-year delay in enacting the regulations. Despite the increased costs to the industry, NLEA may lead to product reformulations for nutritionally inferior products, increased food sales, advertising changes, and more industry competition, while creating new opportunities for chemical analysis labs and label companies.

The beginning of the end of the FCC's comparative hearing process
Article Abstract:
The US D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals in Bechtel v. FCC struck down the FCC's integration policy regarding the issuing of new licenses. The larger effect of the order was that Congress ordered the FCC to end its comparative hearings in the allocation of broadcast licenses. Overall, these steps are positive because it allows the FCC to develop an auction process to distribute broadcast licenses that best serves the public's interests.
