The organization transformation of advocacy: growth and development of AIDS community-based organizations
Article Abstract:
The gay community was largely responsible for the initial community-based organizations (CBOs) created to provide advocacy services for gay AIDS patients as an extension of the gay rights movement. However, as the number of cases grew, public perception became negative and the government failed to respond to the crisis, CBOs began including medical care and case management services. Another transition occurred when CBOs recognized that gay men were not the only AIDS patients and so expanded their target clients. Many CBOs had difficulty adopting the broader client base and the wider range of services while others started approaching Medicaid for funding instead of relying on the grants that funded the initial AIDS-oriented CBOs.

Management of AIDS patients in an academic long-term care facility: report on a four-year experience
Article Abstract:
The experiences, over four years, of a program for persons with AIDS (PWAs) on the multi-disciplinary University of Washington Subacute Care Unit nursing home reveals that PWAs require more intensive chronic long-term nursing care when debiltated than is normal for most nursing homes. Therefore, an intermediary step between hospitalization and a standard nursing home is necessary with reasonably higher compensation than the standard nursing homes. The costs of starting and maintaining a subacute care unit for PWAs are detailed.
