The underlying problem
Article Abstract:
Many nations are facing the same challenges to social security and pension funding that are being addressed in the United States. Many nations, particularly developed nations, have declining birth rates, aging populations and worker-to-retiree ratios that are forecast to drop below 2 to 1 in coming decades. Some countries, such as Chile and Italy, are experimenting with privatization of their retirement programs. Public finance problems and increased global economic competition are making financial reform of these programs even more crucial.

Disability insurance with social insurance integration: the best value?
Article Abstract:
Changing circumstances are making integrated disability insurance more attractive, creating an incentive for needs-based selling rather than contractual dissection. Social Security benefits cover only part of the loss a disabled person suffers financially, and require a long wait and extensive paperwork. Reforms announced in 1994 by the Social Security Administration should ease those problems, and integrated disability insurance contracts can inexpensively supply the balance of lost income without overinsuring.
