Through a glass darkly; John Grisham and Scott Turow lay down the law for millions of Americans. Just what is it they're trying to tell us
Article Abstract:
The works of lawyer/authors John Grisham and Scott Turow portray different visions of the law. The tone of Grisham's stories recalls the Great Depression, with the protagonists coming of age outside the metropolis and facing the ridicule of but then vanquishing the power elite. Turow's works recall the film noir which emerged at the end of World War II, a world where the basic truths are no longer certain. Human frailty is the basic theme of Turow's tales. Law is a sign of our impulse to mitigate misfortune.

Watching your basket; keys to nurturing a successful investment portfolio
Article Abstract:
Lawyers interested in successfully managing their investment portfolios would do well to follow certain steps. The number of issues they hold should be small enough so that they can be actively monitored. Their holdings should be diversified, including stocks, bonds, and mutual funds with 'investment grade' ratings. Price, volume, price-earning ratios and dividend amounts should be monitored. A file should be kept on each investment.
